Frequently Asked Questions

Telehealth with Think Well Therapy offers the same level of care, support, and professionalism as in-person sessions, with the added comfort of connecting from your own space. All that’s needed is a phone, tablet or laptop, internet connection, and a place you feel comfortable to talk.

Many people choose telehealth because it feels more approachable, flexible and accessible especially when accessing mental health support for the first time. Telehealth is available to clients across Australia and provides a simple, supportive way to begin prioritising your mental health and wellbeing

What sets Accredited Mental Health Social Workers apart is their whole-of-person approach: rather than looking at symptoms in isolation, they consider your emotional world, relationships, history, environment, strengths, and stressors together. This allows for a more complete understanding of what is happening and why and considers your mental health within the broader context of your life.

They have strong expertise in psychosocial assessment and are specifically trained to explore the psychological, social, relational and environmental factors shaping your wellbeing. This approach is particularly effective for clients with complex histories, major stressors, trauma, or co-occurring issues.

Accredited Mental Health Social Workers are trained in a wide range of evidence-based therapies, including ACT, CBT, DBT, EMDR, grief and trauma therapy, family work, hypnotherapy, psychotherapy and many other Focused Psychological Strategies. They also bring extensive experience working with complexity and are skilled in supporting clients navigating trauma, chronic illness, stress and burnout, relationship concerns, grief, anxiety, depression and significant life transitions.
The approach is collaborative with the aim to build individual capacity so you feel more equipped to manage your mental health and wellbeing, and cope with life’s challenges.

Accredited Mental Health Social Workers are highly trained mental health clinicians who meet some of the most rigorous professional standards in Australia and are registered with the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW).

Following completion of a university awarded social work undergraduate or master’s degree, they must complete a minimum of 3,360 hours of postgraduate mental health training, a minimum of two years of formal clinical supervision in mental health. They must undertake an invigilated assessment demonstrating competency in mental health assessment and treatment planning, application of evidence-based therapeutic interventions, a person-in-environment approach, and ethical decision-making in line with the AASW Practice Standards for Mental Health Social Workers. To maintain their accreditation, they must undertake more than 30 hours of continuing professional development each year.

All of these professions offer valuable help, and the right choice depends on individual needs. While psychologists often focus on assessment and treatment of internal processes and counsellors focus on emotional support, Accredited Mental Health Social Workers integrate psychological and emotional support with expertise in how life circumstances, systems, stressors, supports and strengths affect mental health. Using this broader lens can make support feel more grounded, relatable and practical.

Counselling provides space to talk openly with someone who is neutral, trained, and not involved in your day-to-day life. A therapist supports you to make sense of your experiences, understand patterns that may be affecting your wellbeing, and learn practical strategies for thinking, feeling and coping in healthier ways.
Therapy can increase clarity, reduce overwhelm and help you feel heard, supported and understood. Evidence-based therapeutic approaches can, over time, shift how your brain responds to stress and emotion, helping you move toward more helpful patterns of behaviour and wellbeing.

Think Well Therapy works primarily with adults, including parents, caregivers, and individuals during pregnancy and the postnatal period.
Supporting parents is one of the most effective ways to support children. Research shows that when parents receive support for their emotional wellbeing and mental health, children benefit through improved emotional regulation, healthier parent–child relationships, reduced stress within the home, greater capacity for attuned and responsive caregiving, and long-term improvements in child mental health outcomes. While Think Well Therapy focuses on working with adults and parents, support can be provided to help you locate a suitable practitioner for your child.

With a GP Mental Health Treatment Plan, Medicare provides rebates for up to 10 individual sessions and up to 10 group sessions each calendar year.
To access Medicare rebates, speak with your GP or psychiatrist and request a Mental Health Treatment Plan along with a referral to an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker at Think Well Therapy.

No. A single session cannot be claimed through both Medicare and Private Health.
However, you can use Private Health and Medicare rebates within the same calendar year—just not for the same session. For example, one session may be rebated through Medicare (with a GP referral) and another through your health fund.

No referral is required for a private health rebate however we recommend contacting your private health insurer to check if you are eligible to receive a rebate for sessions with an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker, and your rebate amount as this it dependent on your individual policy. Full payment is required at the time of your session, after which you can submit your receipt to your health fund.

Payments are processed securely through Zanda. Clients can store their card details safely for automatic processing of regular session fees, including any applicable late-cancellation or non-attendance fees. This system allows seamless payments and provides automated receipts for your records.

Yes. Think Well Therapy works with self-managed and plan-managed NDIS participants, WorkCover QLD and ComCare clients (with a claim number and case-advisor details), clients funded through employer-based workers’ compensation schemes (with written authorisation), and DVA clients with a valid GP referral under the DVA Cycle of Care. We also work with clients seeking support under the Redress Scheme, Victims Assist and Self Refer.

At Think Well Therapy, each appointment is set aside just for you. Having a clear cancellation policy can support the therapeutic process. It encourages clients to attend even on days when showing up feels challenging, and those moments often become meaningful points of progress. Sometimes things come up and appointments need to shift. When this happens at short notice, it usually can’t be filled. The intention isn’t to penalise you; it’s simply to ensure appointment times remain available for the people who need them and keep the practice sustainable.

Think Well Therapy operates within a fee-for-service model which means individual pay is directly connected to payment for each session. When an appointment is missed or cancelled with little notice, it directly impacts income.
We share this policy openly to help give you a perspective from another side. Thank you for your understanding and for valuing the time we dedicate to supporting your wellbeing.
